Review: Dark Matter

Dark Matter Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

God. What can I say about this book. I listened to it in audiobook form, so I didn’t have the choppy sentence/paragraph structure to deal with. That said, I did have to suffer through the schizophrenic chapter structure. Some chapters were written as mystery, some were science fiction, one seemed like it was trying to be a psychological thriller, and another flirted with being a love story. The final chapter came off as a Matrix-style soap opera that had me rolling my eyes the entire time.

When I started to lose faith in this book, I went looking at reviews. Maybe I was just missing something? But then I came across a bunch of other reviews with comments similar to what I was thinking. I even stumbled upon this gem.

As a whole, the writing itself wasn’t terrible. It also wasn’t great either. I would love to have been a fly on the wall during the pitch and editing sessions for this book. Honestly, it is so disjointed, choppy, and lacking direction that all attempts at taking it seriously have been lost.
